In the late 1890's, a one-act play was popular on the Chautaqua circuit that detailed the excesses and dissolute behaviour of the banjo player. It didn't do a lot of good, for people saw the amount of fun the banjo player had and immediately went out and made S.S. Stewart and A.C. Fairbanks famous.

Mrs. R. Gringlethorpe, of Arkham, Mass., made somewhat of a name for herself in this play, but went on to become the wife of Jehosaphat P. Binghamton, original founder of the Famous Banjo Salve Co. (now owned by White Tree Productions).
